The holiday season has passed and winter will end soon. Spring weddings are right around the corner, and we thought it would be fun to post one of last year's Spring weddings to give you some ideas on how to make your wedding special.

Last year, Lawry's Catering had the opportunity to cater Anita and Eric's wedding at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Their wedding theme was "Up in the Clouds" and their reception took place on the museum's rooftop overlooking the city of Pasadena. The special moments were captured by Adrienne Gunde Photography.

The beautiful blue sky matched the décor and set the tone for a lovely springtime event. Each detail of the wedding portrayed the sun, clouds, and the skies. It was a perfect spring day.

The bridesmaids looked radiant in dark blue dresses and their vibrant flowers complimented nicely with the wedding theme.

The reception was modern and simple. The tropical, bright colors of the flowers popped against the shimmering blue linens.

MINGLING AT CHURCH ESTATE VINEYARDS

Rolling vineyards surrounded by magnificent gardens modeled after Monet’s estate at Giverny provided the perfect backdrop for WIPA’s monthly networking mixer at the Church Estate Vineyards in Malibu.

Artful flower arrangements were scattered on tables throughout the estate. It was the perfect touch by Bound, A Floral and Event Studio and Floral Sense LLC.

We were served festive beverages and a buffet of cheeses, artisanal breads, crackers and summer fruit. The event was hosted by Good Gracious! Events who did an amazing job in the presentation, service, and taste!

Fresh water made special with ripe summer peaches and fragant thyme.

After the cocktail hour we strolled through the gardens down to the presentation area which was setup with exotic tents provided by Raj Tents and decadent white leather couches provided by Form Décor.

After an informative presentation, we were all anticipating a fabulous luncheon by the lake from Good Gracious! Events.

The luncheon setup was luxurious and the food was sumptuous. Wonderful, local, fresh ingredients beautifully presented and delicious to eat!

Grand Soirees Event Design and Coordination produced the adorable menus in little gift boxes. They also created all the printing for the event. Everything was well thought out and skillfully executed.

The perfect touch was the cappuccino station by The Cappuccino Club, Inc., and the delectable mini doughnuts with assorted toppings offered by The Fry Girl Inc.

This fairyland venue made us feel that we had flown to Europe for a mini vacation somewhere in Italy or France. It was the perfect afternoon getaway. We could all imagine catering a magical wedding at Church Estate Vineyards.

Lawry's Lavender Wedding

Leon and Seung contacted me in late January to coordinate their wedding. They long-time guests of Lawry’s and were excited to have their reception with us. At first they thought of having an evening reception but, when they saw our wedding luncheon prices, they decided to have a daytime event.

Leon wanted to create an evening atmosphere for the reception. He had a sparkling drape as a backdrop for the dining room and added dramatic up-lighting for color and great special effects.

The wedding ceremony took place at a local church where the mothers of the couple lit the candles that would light Leon and Seung’s unity candle.

Once arriving at Lawry’s for the cocktail reception, the guests enjoyed a sparkling champagne punch and delicious hors d’eouvres

Once I directed the guests to the Main dining room, Leon and Seung made their grand entrance. They looked so happy together!

Fremaux Photography captured all the beautiful colors and lighting that created the evening feel to the room. It most definitely had an “evening” ambiance.

The décor and flowers featured hues of lavender, light blues, and fuchsia.

Lawry's Why We 'Lique' Liqueurs Tasting

These are not your mother's liqueurs. Back in the day, they were an after dinner drink you politely sipped on its own. It has become extreemly versatile and modern.

A lot of people shy away from liqueurs because they think they can't enjoy them in their cocktails. However, this couldn't be farther from the truth. This is an exciting time for bartenders and drinkers alike. While our traditional Martinis and cocktails will always be there and never go out of style; liqueurs provide a new variety of mixable cocktails. There is something for everyone to enjoy!

Lawry's featured a "Liqueurs and Why We 'Lique' Them!" tasting, late April. Co-hosting the event was The Tasting Panel Magazine. We are fans of tastings and enjoy bringing the latest and the greatest spirits for our guests to sample. This event showcased a large assortment of liqueurs, too many to list in this blog.

We picked a few to give you a "taste!"
A special thanks to all the representatives that shared their wisdom on liqueurs with our guests. We thank our wonderful Chef Walter for creating tempting hors d'oeuvres and mini desserts. Lastly, to Jeremie Fremaux for the wonderful pictures.

Agavero Orange Tequila Liqueur

This liqueur is excellent for sipping with a dessert, such as a flan.

Pisa

Indulge in nutty taste sensations with Pisa. This liqueur offers you the combination of hazelnut, almond, and pistachio. Alone these nuts are distinctive in taste, but once blended they form the true original essence of the liqueur Pisa.

When we tried it, we noted the great scent and flavor.

It tastes delightful straight at room temperature, or add rocks. I enjoyed it with a simple splash of coke.

Our recommendation is to create a cheese platter and enjoy Pisa with some nuts and charcuterie!

Solerno

Solerno is 80% proof and is made in Sicily from Sanguinello blood oranges. Each fruit is hand picked at the height of the season from sun-drenched groves.

We enjoyed tasting a delicious summer treat:

Sicilian Cooler with 2 parts Solerno, ¾ Campari, ¾ parts fresh squeezed lemon juice and 3 parts soda water.

Limoncello

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy. It is made from Sorrento lemon peels. Limoncello is served chilled as an after-dinner digestivo. It is an increasingly popular ingredient in cocktails, as it imparts a strong lemon flavor without the sourness or bitterness of lemon juice.

We love recipes passed down from generation to generation, and Limoncello is another example of this tradition. Limoncello’s recipe was handed down to Manuela Zaretti-Carling form her Nonna in Italy. Ventura County, California, is home to some of the most amazing round lemons in the world. Ventura Limoncello’s liqueurs are all natural and handcrafted.

One cocktail recipe to try is Luis' Kiss.

Frangoli

Frangoli has been on the market for 5 years, and it continues to expand the use of its liqueur by encouraging you to try it on ice cream, liven up a fruit salad, or serve it with a barbecue.

It’s a great liqueur for brunch, when served over rocks or with champagne (replacing the Mimosa).

In the bottle you will find a generous content of whole, wild strawberries. We love the look of the floating strawberries as a garnish for your cocktail.

Galliano Ritretto

Galliano Ritretto is a delicious coffee flavored liqueur sourced from the best Arabica and Robusta coffees to capture the essence of ‘un ristretto,’ the concentrated and short espresso adored by Italians.

Try Chocolate Martini cocktail with Galliano Ritretto, espresso, 1 tsp of sugar and toped with chocolate sprinkles.

Glayva

Glayva is a blend of the finest Scotch malt whisky. The versatileness of Glayva could make it your liqueur of choice year round. They have come up with great recipes for you to enjoy while you are relaxing with your friends around the fire on a cold winter’s day or partying into the night on a warm summer’s evening.

Chartreuse

Chartreuse is strong in flavor due to the 130 or so herbs that are blended and distilled by Chartreuse monks. This historic spirit was developed in 1764 by monks in France. It has a pronounced anice flavor. To bring out its entire flavor, it should be consumed very cold, even on the rocks.

The inside story goes that Chartreuse was a coveted recipe by Napoleon, known only by two monks. He stole the recipe in 1605 but could not get it replicated. This is a great spirit for the expert mixologist or the bartender that wants to explore.

LAWRY’S CATERING GOES TO CRAVEN’S ESTATE

My first visit to the Craven’s Estate was when it was featured as the Showcase House in 2010. I fell in love with this venue and decided to promote the site for future weddings. This beautiful estate is located in a residential neighborhood once known as the “Millionaire’s Row.” To read more about the estate, click here. Soon afterwards, I was contacted by Alice and Dennis, who wanted Lawry’s to cater their wedding and were also looking for a venue. Coincidently, they were looking for locations in the Pasadena area. I immediately sent them to the Craven’s Estate and they loved it!

Their amazing photographer Sara from One-Love Photography did a fantastic job capturing their special moments.

The reception them was filled with spring colors and lots of buttons.

The reception was tented and decorated with graceful chandeliers…

Alice and Dennis have a long history with Lawry’s and wanted to make sure their guests experienced our Lawry’s signature Spinning Bowl Salad.

Dennis’ dream came true to be a Lawry’s carver and wear the famous medallion.

The wedding was a huge success. They brought in a photo booth for entertainment and Pinkberry for a late night treat for their guests.

Kristi Drake and Katrina Nix hosted a memorable 60th birthday surprise for their mom, Sharon Fox. They really wanted Sharon to feel special and loved.

All of Sharon’s friends and family arrived early to be ready to welcome her at our entry.

Sharon arrived in style by limo.

Everyone grabbed their cameras and started snapping pictures of her, paparazzi style. She was so surprised and overjoyed.

Sharon looked glamorous in her fitted dress and heels.

Inside, the restaurant was set for her entrance. In our lobby, gold, silver, and black balloons were gathered in a large bunch with their colorful strings festively shouting “Surprise!”

The tables were set with elegant candelabras. Flowers adorned our torchières.

The Durell Coleman Band (DCB) performed several numbers throughout the luncheon. The DC Band played a variety of contemporary and jazz beats. The band was lively and got the crowd dancing to some classic tunes.

LAWRY'S & ABC-GLA PARTNER UP!

Lawry's The Prime Rib hosted an ABC networking event in February. ABC-GLA (Association of Bridal Consultants, Greater LA Chapter) was founded in 1981 and has provided education and networking opportunites to the wedding industry.

The featured vendors did a magnificent job in showcasing Lawry's for a dream wedding. One of our showcasers, SBD Events, featured their signature backdrop, sweetheart table, and cake table.

The sweetheart table was complimented by Flower's by Michael's bridal bouquets and lovely centerpieces.

Fantasy Frostings featured some of their fabulous cakes on display.

We were lucky to have one of their cakes as dessert for the luncheon. They also made complimentary cupcakes. Oh what a sweet temptation! There were many guests who were raving about the sweets. It was a delicious treat for the luncheon.

Designer Specialty Linens featured some of their top linens for 2011. Dahlia impressed us by transforming the Oak room into a beatiful setting for the wedding reception,

The Korman Group provided sparkling chargers, dishware, glassware and flatware that matched Dahlia's elegant linens.

We were delighted to have Marley Majcher from the Party Goddess as our guest speaker. Marley Majcher has her own catering and event planning company. She discussed topics from her book, "But are you Making any Money?" and answered many questions from the audience.

Lawry's First Kosher Catered Dinner

In the twelve years I have been working at Lawry’s, I never imagined us catering a Lawry’s kosher dinner. Last year we were approached by our controller who is a member of the Congregation TIKVAT JACOB. He inquired if we were interested in catering their annual gala. All of the food had to be kosher. I do not have a lot of knowledge of kosher events. All of the staff involved needed to be educated on many details! We were not certain that we could even do this in our kitchen.

We invited the Rabbi from the congregation to Lawry’s to see if it was at all possible to do such an event. According to the Rabbi, “kosher” means fit or proper. Kosher food has been approved to eat because the preparations were proper according to the book of Torah (the first five books of Moses). The dietary laws can be complex and many branches of Judaism have their own interpretation of the laws. One of the main factors of a kosher dinner is that the Torah forbids the cooking of meat and milk together. Also certain foods cannot be eaten such as pork or shellfish.

Once the Rabbi inspected the kitchen and educated our team, the next step was to decide if we were going to be all in on this project! In order for this to be a successful event, we had to buy new dishware, flatware, and kitchen equipment. Luckily the event was taking place at a venue where the rabbi was able to kosher the kitchen. We decided to do this for the experience and the exposure of our catering department in the Jewish community. Plus, now that we have equipment, we can rent it out for future events.

There was a lot of planning and preparation. First we had to shop for equipment prices. That was the easy part because what girl does not like to shop for the new things! Second we had to plan the menu. This was very critical because we were trying to do a Lawry’s signature dinner kosher-style. If you have been to Lawry’s, you soon discovered that meat, butter, and milk are our favorite ingredients and they are all on the same plate! Our Executive Chef Walter Eckstein, Zeidy, Ellen, and I worked on the menu. We were able to purchase kosher prime rib through our meat vendor. Chef was able to create the mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and creamed spinach with a non-dairy substitute. Obviously, we also did not use bacon in the spinach like we usually do. We used margarine instead of butter. All of the bread was provided by a kosher bakery. We looked for appetizers that did not contain any dairy. In the end we were able to create our menu to fit this kosher event!

The rabbi was very involved in the planning. We met with him twice a month. He gave us a lot of suggestions and input on the dinner.

At last it was the day for this gala. Sunday February 13^th. The event was held in Manhattan Beach. We traveled with our new equipment and re-configured food and began the show. Soon after guests arrived, we sent out the hors d’oeuvres, and the party flowed through the night. Guests loved the food and the service. I was very happy and proud of our Lawry’s team.

Halloween Wedding at Lawry's

Julie and Andres Ybarra are huge Halloween fans and have been collecting Halloween themed items for over nine years. So, it was no surprise that when it came to time to choose a wedding date, October 31^st had to be the day. Julie works at the Ronald Regan Hospital at UCLA and Andres is a Bruin grad student. Royce Hall was the perfect location of their wedding ceremony.

Going with the Halloween theme, the bride and groom were Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein, respectively. They requested that every guest attend in a costume of their choice. Even their officiant dressed the part of the Grim Reaper and their photographer was a skeleton creature. Lawry’s is no stranger to hosting themed weddings. We welcomed the opportunity to transform the restaurant to a fun, spooky wedding bash! The bride provided us with a large assortment of Halloween decorations from her collection. We complemented theme with black and orange linens.

Julie and Andres took their task of finding the best cake for their wedding day serious. They did extensive tastings at bakeries all over Los Angeles before selecting their favorite, Fantasy Frostings!

For entertainment Julie surprised Andres with spectacular belly dancers. They swirled and dazzled the guests in their golden wings and swords. They even got all the guests to stand up and dance traditional belly dancing moves.

Lawry’s “Winning” First Tailgate

This year we are excited to have themed menus for each tailgate. Our first tailgate held last Saturday, September 11, USC vs. Virginia, was a total “victory”. The theme for this game was ALL-AMERICAN. We served up yummy Crispy Fried Chicken, Three-Cheese Mac!!, Succotash Salad and Scalloped Potatoes. As if that weren’t enough, to satisfy the three hours pre-game time, we made sure to include our crowd-pleasing Prime Rib and Turkey Sandwiches, Creamed Corn, and our famous Lawry’s Potato Chips! Dessert included juicy watermelon , blondies and brownies!!

We were so excited to see everyone (both new and old friends). We actually doubled our count from last year, with 120 attendees. Every Lawry’s tailgate entry fee includes three hours pre-game of unlimited food and drinks. For this reason, we wanted to make sure to upgrade our bar and add a little extra fun for our guests. We featured Asombroso Tequila and had a margarita station. Asombroso made a refreshing Pink Lemonade garnished with a strawberry.

Do you remember the "90210" tune? Well, we were playfully enjoying walking down memory lane yesterday as the date fell right on 09.02.10!! A lot has changed since Brenda and Brandon came into town, but Beverly Hills is still in a class of its own.
In celebration of all great things our 90210 zip code has to offer, Food & Wine magazine has hosted its first annual Taste of Beverly Hills. Yesterday was the first of a four-day epicurean event celebrating the best food and wine that is both local and from around the world.

Lawry’s joined this fabulous party by serving up plates of Prime Rib sandwiches, our famous potato chips, and our sweet creamed corn! The line was never ending as foodies and prime rib lovers came back for second and even third helpings. There was live music, art, and lots of beer, wine, and alcohol for everyone to enjoy. Celebrity sightings of the night included The Kardashians, the new cast of "90210", and Larry King (among others!).

One of the best compliments came from Jay Weston, producer and publisher of Jay Weston’s Restaurant Newsletter. Jay noted, what we experienced last night first hand, “…the most popular booth was that of Lawry's The Prime Rib, the Beverly Hills eatery on La Cienega which is so ingrained in the meat-loving sensibilities of L.A. natives that it is the first stop to which I take foreign visitors to the city. It's all downhill after that prime rib experience” and last night our very own “General Manager Todd Johnson and his team were dishing out succulent sandwiches of ruby red beef, some 400 pounds of it by the end of the night.”

We love what we serve, The Best Prime Rib In The World! It is our treat and honor to participate in the First Annual Taste of Beverly Hills Festival. We enjoyed seeing a lot of our familiar Lawry’s diners as well as meeting new faces. If you did not attend last night, we will be joining the festivities once more this Sunday, September 5, 2010.

Lawry's 2010 Tequila Tasting Hits High Marks!

Our beautiful Oak room was lined with long tables featuring beautiful, hand-blown bottles and glassware from all of our vendors. Everything was ready for the highly anticipated event of this month, our 2010 Tequila Tasting.

As the line outside the door grew, eager faces waited to check in and begin sampling our featured tequilas. Many of our guests came back to visit us from our recent Spirit Tasting in June. Glasses in hand, everyone made their rounds and delighted their palettes.

Unlike our Spirit Tasting, which included specialty cocktails made from each spirit, this Tequila Tasting event was designed to sample this spirit in its purest form. It was all about sipping and taking the time to taste the full bodied flavors each tequila had to offer.

Our featured tequilas' inspired our Chef to make very tempting passed hors d'oeuvres:

Lawry's: "Yummiest Wedding Ever"

Katie Lee and her creative staff @ Bella Destinee are no strangers to creating the ideal wedding. Katie had the opportunity to have fun with her bride-to-be by planning a wedding at Lawry's. Jennifer Chang, the bride, works for our PR company and decided to celebrate her big day here. Katie blogged about Jennifer and Shin's sweet April wedding. She reminded her readers that back in April, many imports from Holland were impacted due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. True to a spring wedding, peonies and tulips were the flowers of choice for Jennifer. However, with planes on the ground, such lovely flowers were not reaching U.S. shores.

Luckly for Jennifer, Katie's good friend Kerim from My Wedding Blooms, saved the day. As you can see from the pictures, beautiful, fluffy pink flowers were seen around the room and on their pure white wedding cake.

So, what made Jennifer and Shin's wedding the "yummiest?" According to Katie, it was the fabulous table of sweets tempting all of the guests in the main dinning room! Looking at the dessert bar, you couldn't help but think "Pretty in Pink." Embellished with White angels, pink linen, and seemingly bottomless candy jars, this dessert station satisfied everyone's sweet tooth!

Whenever we get a note of thanks, we like to share some of these notes on our blog and say thank you back! Thank you for letting us be part of your special day by having your wedding at Lawyr's. Jennifer and Cory Schepp booked their wedding without ever having eaten a meal here at Lawrys. After they booked the wedding, we invited them in to have dinner with their family as our guests. We wanted them to have the whole "Lawry's" experience.

Our Solid 10's in Taste and Character:

We had a very spirited tasting! There was something in the air or maybe it was the Agwa. The thing about a spirit tasting is that while it is for the enjoyment of your palette, it goes without saying that it's a great way to lift one's mood. In this economy, nothing beats $36 for hors d'oeuvres, new and old familiar faces, and, of course, the drinks! This tasting gave us great ideas for easy-to-make cocktails, just in time for a summer party.

Let's start with Agwa- a green, 60-proof liqueur made of coca leaves imported from Bolivia. This table had lots of goodies for our guests to enjoy. They had our guests take shots of Agwa paired with little bottles of lime powder. Believe us, there were repeat visitors to this table for their cocarita margarita.

For those of you looking for a refreshing summer drink, UV is your answer. UV is a sweet green tea flavored Vodka. Folks, it doesn't get much better than this for those that like the green tea flavor. Our guests tried some yummy UV High Tea made from 1 part UV Sweet Green Tea and 2 parts lemonade.

A personal favorite was the Tres Leches Triple Cream Liqueur, a double-gold medal winner cream liqueur. It was almost like a White Russian without the work. It's tasty as a shot or poured over ice. Their signature tag line is "Go Ahead and Lick the Glass." You just might do so when you realize that this liqueur is really great served with bourbon, coconut rum, coffee tequila, and the list goes on. We are thrilled our guests tried this new find.

Other wonderful featured spirits were Medea. Check out the first spirit brand with a LED display on its label.

El Zacatecanos: won "Best Mescals of Show" at the San Francisco World Spirits competition.

Lawry's Weddings at Stone Manor

We just received the photos from one of the weddings that we catered in April. The venue was Stone Manor, one of my favorite places to be! I had the pleasure of working with Sylvia and Jonathan, the bride and groom. We started planning their wedding over a year ago and involved Priscilla, their on-site coordinator from Valere Productions a few months before the wedding date. I worked with a terrific vendor team that included Duke Photography, Valere Productions, and Smart Party Rents.

The hors d'oeuvres we hosted for the cocktail hour were mini crabcakes with remoulade sauce, goat cheese, purses with caramelized onions, bacon wrapped dates, and coconut shrimp with red curry sauce.

We were able to bring two of our silver carts for our signature roasted prime ribs of beef to the site, which gave the reception area a stylish and elegant look.

Sylvia and Jonathan wished to offer an additional special treat after their dinner. Together we came up with an elaborate fruit station that was a great success. We served delicious yogurt-mint sauce, Grand Marnier sauce, and a caramel sauce to accompany all of the yummy fruit.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR DREAM WEDDING AT LAWRY'S COME TRUE!!

It’s been a month since Stacy and Eric were married at Lawry’s. Happy one month anniversary to both of you! We are still talking about how fun it was to have their wedding with us. Eric and Stacy have proven that Lawry’s can be transformed to accommodate everyone’s dream wedding. By choosing the right vendors, you can have your dream come true!

After becoming engaged in March of 2009, Stacy and Eric began to search for the vendors. They contacted Lawry’s through Here Comes the Guide. They also researched other venues but found that hotels didn’t make them feel like their event was special—they were just one of many weddings taking place the same day. “At Lawry’s we knew we were the only wedding that day and were promised the entire restaurant for our ceremony and reception. We felt special from the beginning.” They enjoyed working with Ellen in the planning, and they took her list of recommended vendors and continued to research for the perfect people to plan their wedding. They had selected me to be their Day of Coordinator and most of our communication was through emails. They also selected Floral Fields as their florist. Debbie Fields had a very big role in their wedding. She was able to transform their vision to a reality!

“In the end, after the wedding everyone was very impressed by it all. Everyone commented on how comfortable they were in their vintge outfits and how much fun it was to put it all together” – Stacy

“We would get calls and emails from our friends and family on sites they had found for inspiration on their outfits such as Recollections.”

When they first started thinking about doing a steampunk wedding, Stacy and Eric went online and found great sites to start the creative process. Stacy found her wedding dress at Etsy online, where you can find items that are hand made. Stacy tells us, “I had seen a corset in a neat jacket style. So, I had really found my dress six months before the wedding.” Eric didn’t waste any time in finding his outfit. In fact, he says, “I went and found twinrosesdesigns online – a site where you can custom order a costume. They had actually done a Steampunk Santa and were familiar with the theme. I had a painting of the suit in mind and just wanted them to change the color. I sent them the picture and gave them my measurements. “

COLLABORATIVE EFFORT:

Creating a Steampunk wedding took a lot of collaboration from Stacy and Eric and most of their vendors. Eric and Stacy had to educate Debbie on what a Steampunk theme was. “This was my first steampunk theme wedding,” said Debbie, “I searched online for descriptions of steampunk to wrap my head around this idea. Eric and Stacy were so helpful when we first met. They brought pictures that I could keep of what they were looking for.” As months went by, Eric and Stacy were exchanging links with Debbie on online resources of possible items they could purchase for centerpieces. “I soon realized I had cool things around my house that could be helpful to them and I started taking pictures to send to them as well” explained Debbie.

From a creative stand point; Debbie had so much fun working on this wedding. She enjoyed the collaborative effort and described Stacy as “a visionary bride.” Although, we should note that Eric was very much the visionary groom! He tells us how he worried about not having enough items to give Debbie. “I had an idea to find test tubes. I wasn’t sure how Debbie would use them. She turned them upside down and glued some of the smaller pieces,” said Eric.

THE CENTER PIECES:

“We worried about ruining the vintage books but we had these ideas of how to incorporate the books by tearing them apart and putting some of the pages rolled up in tubes. We also rolled empty wine bottles in the dirt to give them the look of being very old.” --Debbie Fields

Brides, be creative! Stacy went to a paper store and used a lot of scrapbooking items to create her name cards.

These centerpieces can only be described as secret gardens. Each centerpiece was original.

“We got engaged in March and met with Debbie in August. So we had about 6-7 months to start gathering boxes full of possible pieces for Debbie to use for the centerpieces. We looked for items like old typewriters, clocks, springs, tubes, and vintage books.” –Stacy

“We were so surprised at how well the Lawry’s décor worked for a steam punk theme. It was lovely to be able to use as many candles as we wanted without worrying about a fee or getting a permit. Another flexible item surprise was that Lawry’s offered you the choice to have up to three entrees without any extra charge.”- Stacy

This bust and Shakespearean medallion are part of Lawry’s décor in the Oak Room where the ceremony was held.

THE CAKE:
It was also important to have the right cake. How can you have a “normal” wedding cake for a Steampunk Wedding?? Eric and Stacy started searching online to find the perfect baker. “We wanted a distinctive cake that would match such a strong theme as Steampunk,” said Eric. They found one specific bakery in Orange County, Let Them Eat Cake by Christopher Garrens, who was being featured on the TV series Amazing Wedding Cakes. Christopher Garrens created sketches for Eric and Stacy to help visualize the concept. Eric and Stacy also loved his Grand Marnier Cake. After meeting with Christopher and seeing his sketches they were confident that the cake was a clear representation of their vision.

FINAL MESSAGE:
The purpose of this article is to inform brides and grooms that they can have their wedding of their dreams if they take the time and do the necessary research. Vendors should be responsive to your calls and emails, behave professional, and, most importantly, have a passion for what they do.

“We found our vendors early on. It helps to find your vendors ahead of time and trust that they will do a great job. We had faith in our vendors and knew that we picked them for a reason…I had tears in my eyes when I saw what Debbie (the florist) had done in the end. It was a perfect wedding team” Eric Reardon-Groom

Most importantly, you have to create a realistic budget and be clear about it to your vendors! It is very difficult as a vendor to create proposals to the client when we do not have a budget to work with. Stacy and Eric had a budget and were practical about it. They mentioned to me that their original plan was to schedule their wedding much earlier, but realized that they were not going to have enough money saved. Eric and Stacy’s advice in planning a budget? “Be realistic and save money so that you do not have to worry about not including something that you really want. In the end if you wait and save the money, then you will have the wedding of your dreams.”

Steampunk Wedding at Lawrys!

Today’s Blog Topic is a teaser on our very first Steampunk Wedding held at Lawry’s the Prime Rib Beverly Hills on Saturday, April 10, 2010. Congratulations to both Stacy Horn and Eric Reardon on their nuptials, and special thanks for allowing us to share their wedding day event on our blog. We have plans to interview Stacy (Bride) and Debbie Fields (Florist/Designer from Floral Fields) to get the inside scoop on creating their own Steampunk event!

So, what is Steampunk? Perhaps some of you are already familiar with the history behind it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Steampunk originates from literature! Steampunk, as defined by Wikipedia, is "a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used- usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England." These works of literature played with the world of imagination to create speculations based on current or future science and technology!
Since art does imitate life, it’s not surprising that this sub genre of science fiction is being brought to life not only in magazines, films ,but most imaginatively to weddings! The first thing we noticed the day of the wedding was all of the cogs, gears, and springs incorporated in the decorations. When I googled Steampunk Wedding I came up with the link to Offbeat Bride. Turns out Steampunk is a very popular wedding theme! Rightly so, Steampunk provides the backdrop for a fun, creative, and unique wedding.

Look forward to our upcoming posts with interviews from Stacy and Eric as well as the wonderful Debbie Fields. I’d like to end this post by answering a question raised by Elizabeth Oakes in her article Neo-Victorian Style and steampunk weddings. Elizabeth asks, “Can steampunks re-engineer our stale array of Victorian wedding traditions and resurrect the Victorian spirit of exploration and innovation before we’re lost to commercialized cookie-cutter weddings forever?” After experiencing Stacy and Eric’s wedding at Lawry’s, we would love to answer that question with a resounding YES! Not to take away from traditional weddings and after, all at Lawry’s we love doing traditional. It was such a fun, creative, and exciting event to be a part of. I think it inspired so much energy and sheer inventiveness on the part of the vendors and guests. It offers the wedding couple a chance to put their own stamp on their wedding and transport everyone to another era!

USC Tailgates Catered by Lawry's...Preparing for 2010

2009 was the first year that Lawry's Catering participated at the LA Coliseum for all six USC home games. We tailgated three hours before each game and had a blast doing it. While it involved much planning, scheduling, and executing for our team; it was well worth the results. Each tailgate was a learning experience. Most importantly was that I met some very wonderful people- some of whom came to every tailgate!

Our busiest tailgate was obviously USC vs. UCLA where we had over 200 guests attend. Our two bartenders were busy bees the entire night, serving their famous Red and Gold Bear drinks and the signature Lawry's Breeze. Of course, beer, beer, and more beer was the prime request. The line never ended for us! A note for next year... more bartenders!

Our Lawry's Carvers were also busy serving our hungry fans at all the tailgates. Each menu was slightly different, but always consisted of our Roasted Prime Rib Sandwiches garnished with horseradish, creamy blue cheese, and crispy onions. Our Roasted Turkey Sandwiches were also a hit with our famous pesto mayo sauce and fresh cranberries. Another very popular event featured grilled sausages with Chef's fabulous German Potato Salad.

This year, our wonderful Chef Walter is planning to create special food themes for each tailgate. Maybe an Oktoberfest theme, Halloween menu, and some tailgates with our opponent's favorite foods! Any ideas you would like to give me?

I am happy to announce that our prices will remain reasonable. Each tailgate will cost $65 per entry. If you purchase all six tailgates, we will lower the price to $55 each entry. Lawry's Successful Vodka Tasting 2010!

We sent out a call for vodka connoisseurs and they came! Our Lawry's event was a success because of the wonderful guests that joined us that night and experienced the excellent array of vodkas offered! Not only were our guests able to sip on Chopin and Blue Angel Vodka shots; they were treated to delicious martinis.

Tito's Vodka made a dirty martini with tomolives. You haven't tried a dirty martini until you have one with pickled green tomatoes! Grey Goose's bartender extraordinaire delighted the crowd by shaking a secret pear recipe. Yum!

Best of all was pairing up a pepper-vodka soaked cherry tomato or trying an oyster a la russe.

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away." A vodka tasting a year keeps us lively and in good cheer. We hope to hear from our attendess that night. Post comments and tell us what you enjoyed. Lawry's The Prime Rib has hosted another successful Oktoberfest at the restaurant. Native Bavarian and executive Chef Walter Eckstein feels at home, proudly creating a buffet of traditional fare matched with eight of the best, classic beers presented by
German beer specialist Larry James.
The Oak Room was festively decorated with balloons, banners, and special linens.

The buffet menu consisted of assorted traditional salads such as German potato, refreshing marinated cucumber salad and savory bavarian cabbage. The buffet featured assorted cold cuts sliced to order, smoked trout and matjes herring. Our favorite sausages were the bratwurst, weisswurst, and bockwurst that were served with warm sauerkraut and assorted mustards. The Lawry's carvers offered roasted veal shank, roasted pork shank, and stuffed breast of veal. The guests finished their evening with plum cake and apple strudel. Lawry's Catering & The Union Station: John and Takako Sept. 26, 2009

The Los Angeles Union Station is one of LA's most recognizable landmark. It was completed in 1939 and is also known as the "Last of the Great Railway Stations" built in the United States. Architects John and Takako selected the formal gardens and courtyard to host their wedding reception. It is decorated by white concrete pillars and planted flowerbeds in a circular design.

Lawry's Catering celebrated a beautiful wedding event at Stone Manor on July 11, 2009. Melissa enjoyed working with Debbie and Martin in planning their wedding. It was the first time for Lawry's to host an event at the Stone Manor.

The estate overlooks the grand Pacific Ocean stretching from Catalina to Santa Monica Bay. The mansion has a series of terraces where you can easily take advantage of the space.

The ceremony is usually in the upper terrace where you can easily set up for more than 100 guests. The gardens are surrounded with beautiful greens and flowers that drop down to enhance the wedding.

Stone Manor inspired us to create special hors d'oeuvres and cocktails to match the beauty of the venue.

From start to finish, it was a memorable day!

Lawry's The Prime Rib hosted their first wine dinner for 2009. Executive Chef Walter Eckstein designed the perfect five course meal to complement these wonderful wines. Two of the courses featured on the left were Seared Ahi Tuna Salad with a wasabi vinaigrette and crispy wontons and Individual Beef Wellingtons with Sauce Perigord.

Silverado has been quietly producing world-class wines from their state-of-the-art winery for over 20 years. Their handcrafted wines are created in small lots with extreme care. They express richness, elegance and age-worthiness.

Winemaker John Emmerich mingled with the guests and went to each table to speak about the three featured Silverado wines. Selected were the 2008 Miller Ranch, Single Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc; the 2007 Napa Valley Chardonnay; and the famous 2004 Napa Valley Fantasia, which is only served at Tip Top Club 33 at Disneyland.
